SPIE Announces 2017 SPIE IDL Photo Contest  Winners

Photographers from India, Slovakia, and Chinese Taipei were named winners of the 2017 SPIE International Day of Light photo contest, from more than 950 entries depicting the world-of-light theme.

Starting this year, SPIE is sponsoring an annual International Day of Light photo contest. The goal of the contest is to raise awareness about the International Day of Light and the vital role that light and light-based technologies play in daily life.

The winners are:

First-place prize ($2,500): Xingxingdiandeng by Rossi Fang of Kaohsiung City, Chinese Taipei;
a shower of fireworks illuminating a hilltop, with the stars of the night sky above.

Second-place prize ($1,000): Let There Be Light by Daniela Rapavá of Sobota, Slovakia; light effects from a frozen bubble of detergent and sugar, illustrating the colorful interactions of light and crystals.

Third-place prize ($500): Creating Future by Sudipto Das of Kolkata, India; a woman proudly displaying her solar-powered lamp.
