First Speakers Announced for UNESCO-ICTP Illuminating Education Conference

The organizers of the International Day of Light conference at the UNESCO Category 1 Institute ICTP in Trieste on 16 May 2019 are delighted to announce the first speakers of what will be a rich and exciting programme.  The conference theme for 2019 is “Illuminating Education” and presentations will cover a wide range of topics, from inspiring science to practical career advice.   

 

The conference keynote speaker is ICTP Distinguished Lecturer Sir Michael Berry from the University of Bristol who will present Optica fantastica - images to illuminate the physics of light, a topic is ideally suited to engage interest and promote science outreach to the public of all ages.  Other presentations will see a wide range of leading international speakers discuss diverse subjects such as light and development, international collaborations, issues relating to light and science education in general, career development and more. Other confirmed speakers include: 

               Amna Abdalla Mohammed Khalid (Next Einstein Forum)

               Brian Liebel (Illuminating Engineering Society)

               Cather Simpson (University of Auckland)

               Jess Wade (Imperial College London)

               Rachel Won (Nature Photonics).  

 

Additional presentations will be given by representatives from the International Astronomical Union, UNESCO-ICTP, and a real highlight will be a Student Session where a number of students from the international networks of EPSIEEEOSASPIE, IAPS and other partners will discuss issues both of how they promote science outreach, and how they see their careers in science developing in the future.  Other speakers will be announced in the coming weeks. 

 

How to attend

 

If you are planning to attend and you will not need a visa to travel to Italy, you can register now on Eventbrite here (before 10 May 2019).

 

For those who will need visas, or for attendees from developing countries who wish to apply for a Travel Grant (a limited number are available), you will need to register using the link on the ICTP website here and select the “Apply Here” item in the menu on the left to fill in an application form.    

 

The deadline for travel grant applications is 17 March 2019.
