A message from the SESAME Light Source for the International Day of Light

The SESAME synchrotron located in Jordan is a flagship UNESCO project which provides a visionary example of science and diplomacy working hand in hand. SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) was inaugurated on 16 May 2017, and the annual International Day of Light, which falls on the same day, is a wonderful occasion to reflect on the tremendous progress that is being made, and the many opportunities in the future.

SESAME is a third-generation light source, unrivaled in the region, which offers scientists and researchers a scientific centre of excellence.  SESAME also aims to provide state-of-the-art technological equipment to researchers in the region, helping stem the brain drain to northern countries.  It is also an outstanding example of scientific diplomacy as the project brings together representatives of Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, Palestine and Turkey, as well as cooperation agreements with many other international partners.

This message from SESAME for the International Day of Light 2021 includes messages from the President of the SESAME Council Professor Rolf Heuer, the SESAME Director Professor Khaled Toukan, as well as from many other scientists and users of the facility.
